“We welcome Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara to the Department of Education (DepEd),” it said.

“The DepEd community looks forward to working with the new leadership as we continue our relentless pursuit towards improving the quality of basic education in the country,” DepEd added.

Reporters have telephoned the Office of the Vice President for a comment regarding Angara’s appointment but have not yet received a response.

Duterte resigned as DepEd chief on June 19.

She did not provide a specific reason for her resignation but explained that her decision was not a sign of weakness and was driven by compassion for teachers and students.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the education reform advocacy group Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) expressed optimism that Angara’s experience will enhance the government’s ability to address education issues effectively.
