Pagadian City marks 55th anniversary with 'Lechon Festival'

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur—A roasted pig garbed as a basketball player won the best lechon plum during a festival here in time for the city’s 55th charter anniversary.

The 4th Lechon Festival opened last Wednesday at the Baywalk Boulevard with entries from 31 villages.

The official festivities wrapped up on Friday but the celebrations spilled over on Saturday.

City Tourism Officer Gerardo San Pablo said the local government allocated P50,000, P40,000 and P30,000 for the top winners, and another P9,000 each entry as consolation prize.

San Pedro Barangay Chairman Dionisio Sumampong who took the crown as champion of the competition said their lechon was Boston Celtics-inspired after the team won the National Basketball Association crown this season.

Other winners were Hawaiian-dressed and polka-dotted lechons.

The festival aims to celebrate the market success of local roasted pig which has reached Manila and Cebu customers.

Mayor Samuel Co said the delivery of lechon orders to Cebu and Manila are made possible by the daily flights to these destinations
