More than 6,000 motor vehicles were apprehended nationwide in the first 15 days of June following the continuing “aggressive” implementation of the “No Registration, No Travel” policy, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said on Friday.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said in a statement that the continuous operation should serve as “a constant reminder” to delinquent motor vehicle owners of their obligation to renew the registration of their vehicles.

“The renewal of the registration is not only an obligation to the government, it is also an obligation to yourself and your family because doing so would compel you to ensure the roadworthiness of your motor vehicles, for your safety, for the safety of your loved ones,” Mendoza said.

“Let us not blame ourselves in the end as to what should have been done. The penalty is high, and there’s also impoundment [of the vehicle]. But what’s worse is if our negligence would lead to accident,” he added.

According to the LTO, a total of 6,064 motor vehicles were apprehended from June 1 to June 15. Of the figure, 5,127 were motorcycles while the rest were four-wheel vehicles.

A total of 5,470 were issued with violation tickets while 981 were impounded.

For the four-wheel vehicles, 34 were passenger jeepneys while seven were passenger buses.

The LTO’s intensified campaign against unregistered motor vehicles was part of the road safety instruction of the Department of Transportation.

“We will continue strictly implementing this policy. Let’s not wait anymore for something to go wrong before doing the right thing to register your vehicle,” Mendoza said. —JEROME ANING
