MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is giving educational assistance to 10,756 incoming college students, who qualified for its 2024 Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarships.

The DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) said the total consists of 5,839 students who qualified under its scholarship program for economically disadvantaged students, and 4,917 who qualified under the scholarship program for students excelling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

But this count may still go up as 244 scholarship applicants have been asked to resubmit some requirements, it noted.

A total of 89,510 students took the qualifying exams for the educational grant last April.

Under the 2024 Science and Technology Undergraduate Scholarships, qualified incoming college students will receive a monthly stipend of P8,000, and tuition fee grants of up to P40,000 per academic year for students enrolled in private universities and colleges, among other benefits, according to the DOST-SEI.

The scholars are expected to enjoy these benefits in the first semester of the Academic Year 2024-2025.

The DOST-SEI said the students should enroll in a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree course enumerated in its priority programs, and later work in their specialized field equivalent to the number of years they received the scholarship.

“Our vision is that through these scholarships, we can provide equal opportunities for the students to have such kind of affordances that can equip them with the right tools and knowledge to become the future STEM leaders of this country,” DOST-SEI Officer Albert Mariño said.
