NDRRMC issues flood warnings to 11 regions

MANILA, Philippines—The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Thursday issued flood warnings to eleven regions due to continuous rains brought about by the existing tail-end of cold front affecting parts of the country.

In its advisory, the NDRRMC placed flood advisories for Regions 1 (Ilocos Region), 3 (Central Luzon), 4B (Mimaropa), 7 (Central Visayas), 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 11 (Davao provinces), 12 (Soccsksargen), 13 (Caraga), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

In Region 1, the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan are likely to be affected by flooding due to moderate heavy rains. In Central Luzon, rivers in Zambales are likely to overflow, the NDRRMC said. Likewise, rivers in Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao and Benguet may likely overflow due to continuous light to moderate rains, the state-run disaster risk reduction council said.

In Mimaropa, light to moderate rains may flood rivers and tributaries in Mindoro provinces while Region 7 will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms, which may flood waterways in Bohol, Cebu, Siquijor and Negros Oriental.

Waterways in Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay will likely be flooded due to moderate rains while rivers in Misamis Occidental, Lanao del norte, Bukidnon, Camiguin Island and Misamis Oriental may also flood due to light moderate rains.

Rivers in Northern Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Dinagat Island, Shariff Kabunsuan, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan and Sulu are also at risk of flooding due to light to moderate rains, the NDRRMC said.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC lowered their flood warnings for the provinces of Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Southern Leyte, Leyte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Masbate, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras and Negros Occidental.

In its weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said that the tail-end of a cold front is affecting Northern Luzon while the intertropical convergence zone is prevailing over Mindanao.
