Dangerous heat index forecast in 29 areas on Wednesday

MANILA, Philippines — A dangerous heat index is forecast in twenty-nine areas across the country on Wednesday, Independence Day, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa said Aparri and Tugegarao in Cagayan and Virac, Catanduanes, are forecast to have the highest heat index at 46°C.

In Metro Manila, Pagasa said its station in Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay is seen to record a heat index of 42 °C while its station in Science Garden in Quezon City is only forecast to have 41°C, just a degree below the “danger” threshold.

The US National Weather Services describes heat index as the apparent temperature, or “what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.  This is an important consideration for the human body’s comfort.  When the body gets too hot, it [perspires or sweats] to cool itself off.”
