Kanlaon Volcano quakes, sulfur dioxide flux decrease again – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano has continued to register fewer earthquakes and sulfur dioxide flux during the latest 24-hour monitoring of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Phivolcs, only three volcanic earthquakes were recorded from Monday (June 10) midnight to Tuesday (June 11) midnight. A day before, six earthquakes were recorded at the volcano.

The state seismologist said they started to observe a sharp decrease in volcanic tremors from midnight (June 9) on Sunday to midnight on Monday.

Previously, Kanlaon’s volcanic earthquakes were in the double digits.

Phivolcs also said the volcano discharged a 500-meter tall plume with “moderate emission” and 2,249 metric tons of sulfur dioxide flux during its 24-hour surveillance.

Kanlaon Volcano, or Mt, Kanlaon in the Negros Island, erupted on June 3 and has since been placed under Alert Level 2 by the state seismologist.

Its explosion and the consequent rain-induced lahar flow have contaminated water sources and resulted in significant losses in Negros Island’s agriculture, according to local officials.
