CAAP: Airports operation still normal despite Kanlaon eruption

Kanlaon Volcano alert raised amid increasing unrest

MANILA, Philippines — No affected airports have been reported yet, after the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, said the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Monday.

According to CAAP in an advisory, both Bacolod-Silay Airport and Dumaguete Airport were unaffected by the phreatic eruption.

“Bacolod-Silay Airport operation was not affected by Mt. Kanlaon phreatic eruption. Airport operation is normal as of this time,” said CAAP, citing Area 6 Manager Eusebio Joebon Monserate.

“[Meanwhile] Dumaguete Airport … operation is still normal as of this time,” it added, citing Dumaguete Airport Manager Allan Punay.

The phreatic eruption at Kanlaon occurred at 6:51 p.m and lasted for six minutes, producing a plume that rose up to 5,000 meters

Currently, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology placed Kanlaon under Alert Level 2 and advised civil aviation authorities to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit.
