Guiuan, Eastern Samar hits 54ºC on Monday — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — An estimated peak heat index of 54ºC was recorded in Guiuan, Pangasinan on Monday, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The heat index is the “measure of the contribution that high humidity makes with abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body’s ability to cool itself.”

Once a heat index reaches over 52ºC, Pagasa automatically tags it under the “extreme danger” classification as heat stroke at this point is already imminent.

Meanwhile, based on Pagasa’s latest computed heat index, 41 other areas also registered heat indices above 42ºC.

This includes Metro Manila, specifically, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) in Pasay City, which logged a peak index of 46ºC.

At this level, once it ranges from 42ºC to 51ºC, Pagasa tags it as a “danger category” due to the increased risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke.
