MANILA, Philippines — Aparri in Cagayan province was forecast to have a peak heat index of 47ºC as 42 other areas nationwide would feel dangerously high temperatures on Friday, May 31, the state weather agency said.

The “danger” level heat indices come even as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the onset of the rainy season in the country on May 29.

Pagasa defines heat index as the “measure of the contribution that high humidity makes with abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body’s ability to cool itself.”

It also explained that heat ranging from 42ºC to 51ºC falls under the “danger category” due to increased risk of high temperature-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke.
