Motorcyclist dead in Quezon road crash

LUCENA CITY – A helmetless motorcycle rider died in a road accident on Wednesday, May 29, in the island town of Quezon in Quezon province.

In a report on Thursday, May 30, the Quezon police said that motorcyclist Junell Odoño, 35, was negotiating an ascending curved section of the road in Barangay Guinhawa around 4 p.m.

Police said Odoño lost control of the vehicle, hit the gutter on the roadside, and was thrown off the motorcycle.

Odoño, who was not wearing a crash helmet, suffered grave head injuries and died on the way to the hospital, the report said.

Wearing crash helmets for all riders of two-wheeled motorized vehicle is mandated under Republic Act No. 10054, otherwise known the “Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.”

However, despite the regularity of police checkpoints, motorcycle riders have been seen driving on the streets and national highway in the province without wearing crash helmets.
