MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is rushing to complete flood mitigation programs in Metro Manila as the country awaits the official start of the rainy season with the arrival of Severe Tropical Storm “Aghon” over the weekend.
According to MMDA Chair Don Artes, at least two pumping stations, all in the City of Manila, are nearing completion along Taft Avenue and the Malate district, while another pumping station on Padre Faura is expected to be completed in July.
Artes said the first two pumping stations could be operated and powered by generator sets if needed.

According to the MMDA, all the agency’s 71 pumping stations are fully operational, with 36 being upgraded under the Metro Manila Flood Management Project.
As another flood mitigation measure, the agency also regularly cleans drainage, creeks, and other waterways.
Should pumping stations be insufficient, Artes said they had agreed to open the floodgates of the sewerage treatment plant in Manila Bay as needed so that flood water would flow freely and recede quickly in flooded areas.
