Nancy Binay's options after Senate: Makati mayor or full-time 'labandera'

Sen. Nancy Binay (Bibo Nueva España/Senate PRIB)

MANILA, Philippines — Will Senator Nancy Binay run for mayor of Makati or become a “full-time” laundress?

Binay gave these options when interviewed about her plans for the 2025 elections.

At first, the senator giggled when asked over Radyo 630 on Wednesday if she could be called Mayor Nancy Binay next year.

“Kung magdidilang anghel ka why not?” the senator said.

(If your words come true, why not?)

However, Binay said the recent development in the Senate could be a sign that she should consider running for mayor in Makati City.

Binay was referring to the reorganization of the Senate with the election of its new president, Senator Francis Escudero, replacing Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.

Asked  later about her options as her two-term in the Senate expires  in 2025, Binay said: “Option ay maging full-time  labandera or maging mayor.”

(The option is to become a laundress or a mayor.)

She ruled out the possibility of her running for a seat in the House of Representatives.

According to her, she does not see herself as part of the House.

“Kung yun lang pagpipiliian, magfu-fulltime labandera na lang ako,” said the senator.

(If that’s the only option, then I will just become a full-time laundress.)

Should she seek the mayoral post next year, Binay might be running against her brother-in-law, Makati 2nd District Rep. Luis Campos Jr.

Campos is the husband of the senator’s sister, incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay.

The senator, though, said they have yet to discuss this possible showdown with Campos.

“But you know at least hindi mangyayari yung Binay versus Binay,” she said.

(But at least there will be no Binay versus Binay.)

“Walang dugo na maglalaban (No family members will fight for the same position),” she added.
