MANILA, Philippines — A total of 35,371 students in Makati City who completed the school year 2023-2024 recently received grocery packs from the city government.
The Makati City Information and Community Relations Department said in a statement on Tuesday that the grocery bags were distributed to students from kindergarten to senior high school and special education levels.
The project, which was implemented in collaboration with the Department of Education, was rolled out in 16 public elementary schools and eight high schools in the city.
A total of 19,750 and 15,621 packs were allocated to the students at the primary and secondary levels, respectively.
Among its contents are snacks, powdered drinks, breads, juice, noodles, cheese, and t-shirts.
Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said the initiative began for the school year 2020-2021 as an “incentive” for public school students who successfully completed their respective grade levels despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have decided to make this an annual incentive that students can look forward to at the end of each school year. We want to show our appreciation of the hard work and diligence of our students and motivate them to continue doing their best in their studies every school year, until they graduate,” Binay said in a statement.
“We have prepared a highly nutritious and tasty food pack that the students can enjoy during the school break,” she added, noting that the grocery pack distribution has become a much-anticipated tradition for Makati students.
