THERE will be no Cebu Sports Festival for this year after organizers decided to cancel the event and instead focus on next year’s edition.
The annual event showcases different sporting events held at the South Road Properties.
“We regret to inform you that Sportsfest 2012 will be postponed to April of next year,” said Cebu City Sports Commissioner and Cebu Fest Chairman Brian Lim in a press release.
“As much as the committee is dedicated to making the event materialize, we don’t want to press on if we can’t guarantee our sports organizers with quality support, marketing, transportation, support services, etc.”
Lim said they will double their efforts to stage a bigger event next year. They also decided to rename the event as the Cebu International Sports Fest & Expo 2013. It is scheduled for April 21 to 28, 2013.
This early, Lim is calling for interested sports organizations to sign up for them to be included in the official lineup of activities for next year’s event.
“We welcome more sports groups that may want to join. Naturally the sporting organizations that already expressed support will continue to prepare for next year’s activities.”
The last Cebu Sports Fest was held last May 14 to 21, 2011. Foreign and local tourists were part of over 80,000 who swarmed the SRP for the event, which featured over 23 different sports.
“Sinulog was not an overnight sensation either. It took years for it to become the most successful festival it is today. Cebu Fest is an event that offers great opportunities. We just need to give it time to evolve,” Lim added. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
