MANILA, Philippines — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called on dioceses in the country to observe the International Day of Conscience on June 16.
According to CBCP President and Diocese of Caloocan Bishop Pablo David, this was to align people’s consciences to be more sensitive to peace and sustainability.

“Let us unite in shifting the global conscience towards peace and sustainability. We look forward to your support in making this day a significant moment in our moral and spiritual journey,” David said in a circular on Monday.
David added that Pope Francis had recognized the day and related it to the life of Portuguese diplomat Aristide de Sousa Mendes, who helped numerous Jews flee France, which was occupied by Nazis in World War II.
The prelate likewise said there were proposals to celebrate the Day of Conscience on the Sunday nearest to April 3 and 5 starting in 2025.

Meanwhile, David added that the day was also dedicated to promoting a nuclear-free world among the youth.
He also said, “We aim to engage our youth in advocating for a world free from the risks of nuclear proliferation.”
In 2019, the United Nations declared April 5 as the International Day of Conscience.
