MANILA, Philippines — Citing agriculture’s vital role in food security, environmental protection and development, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared every July as Philippine Agriculturists Month.

In Proclamation 544, signed on May 10, Marcos said that professional agriculturists must be honored for their dedication to improving agricultural productivity and competitiveness.

“Agriculture plays a significant role in ensuring food security, as well as fostering environmental protection and balanced urban and rural development,” the President said.

Raising awareness

By dedicating a month to celebrating Filipino agriculturists, the country can recognize their contributions, hard work and dedication and raise awareness about the agriculture sector’s importance and significance “in enhancing nationwide agricultural productivity and competitiveness,” he added.

One of the President’s key promises upon assuming office was to ensure food security for the country by improving support for the agriculture sector through technology, training and financial aid for farmers and fisherfolk. —Julie M. Aurelio
