MANILA, Philippines — Former Senator Bam Aquino is the new chairman of the Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KANP), Aquino’s office announced on Tuesday.
According to lawyer Chel Diokno, a member of the KANP, Aquino’s chairmanship was part of the party’s preparations for the 2025 midterm elections.

“Mahalaga ang pagkilos na ito kasabay ng pagpapalakas at pagpapatibay ng aming hanay bilang preparasyon para sa 2025 elections,” Diokno said in a release.
(This move is important because it strengthens our party in preparation for the 2025 elections.)
Meanwhile, Aquino said that the party will veer into presenting as an “alternative” for Filipinos against the alleged presence of traditional politics in the country.
“As we enter another pivotal chapter in our country’s political history, KANP will present itself as a viable alternative for Filipinos weary of traditional politics and politicians,” Aquino said in the same release.
Previously, Aquino was part of the Liberal Party.

Aquino also announced earlier that he will run for a senatorial seat in the 2022 elections.
“Handa na rin ako bumalik sa larangan ng pulitika,” Aquino said in an interview on ANC.
