MANILA, Philippines — An ammonia leak occurred on Monday at an ice plant in Pasay City, leaving four fire volunteers needing medical treatment after inhaling fumes.
The incident at Summit Ice Plant on Layug Street in Barangay 3 was reported at 10:05 a.m., with Bureau of Fire Protection personnel responding by isolating the leak. They also conducted ventilation and air monitoring.

A report by radio station dzBB said that four fire volunteers were given first aid after experiencing difficulty breathing due to inhaling ammonia fumes.
No other injuries were immediately reported. By 11:49 a.m., air quality readings were back to normal at the plant, with fire officials declaring the site safe.
Fire Inspector Amado Revira also said the leak had been contained. The cause, however, remains under investigation. Ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant in industrial freezing and refrigeration systems. —Russel Loreto
