MANILA, Philippines — The government will intensify patrols in the West Philippine Sea following suspected new reclamation attempts, National Security Council (NSC) Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said on Monday.
At the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing, Malaya was asked about suspected reclamation activities in Escoda (Sabina) Shoal.
“We will do what is necessary to stop whatever is happening there. We will intensify surveillance in those areas and deploy more assets for maritime patrol,” said Malaya in a mix of English and Filipino.
Malaya said that the 2016 Arbitral Ruling was clear— ensure that there are no reclamation attempts in Philippine waters.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines said Monday that suspected reclamation activities in the area have already been deterred.
Malaya added that every West Philippine Sea feature is being monitored, including Pag-asa Cays 1, 2 and 3.
