CHR lauds monthly grocery discount of P500 for seniors and PWDs

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights on Thursday backed a P500 monthly grocery discount for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), saying it would help in their expenses.
According to CHR Commissioner Beda Epres, the move will be more inclusive and will improve the well-being of elderlies and PWDs.

“This initiative reflects the Commission’s collective efforts to improve the quality of life for our elderly and persons with disabilities. This also demonstrates our shared commitment to inclusivity and welfare for all,” Epres said in a statement.
The CHR added the discount will also help adjust expenses for the two demographics, taking into account their cost of living, transportation and other needs.
“Given the rising cost of living, particularly in essential areas such as food, healthcare, housing and transportation, the CHR believes that increased discounts will relieve financial burdens and contribute to ensuring a decent standard of living for senior citizens and persons with disabilities,” the commission noted.

The CHR made the statement following a joint administrative order signed by the Departments of Trade and Industry, Agriculture and Energy in March.
Under the order, senior citizens and PWDs have a discount of P125 weekly as they purchase groceries and other commodities, which totals to P500 monthly.
The previous discount was only P65 weekly, totaling P260 monthly.
The new order took effect on March 25.
