MANILA, Philippines — Two Supreme Court Justices received their Juris Doctor degrees from the University of the East (UE) on Thursday.
According to the UE, Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao and retired Associate Justice Dante Tinga both received their undergraduate degrees, as well as held teaching roles in its College of Law, in the university.

Tinga likewise became dean of the UE College of Law from 1998 to 1992 and 2014 to 2018.
Dimaampao and Tinga led the 505 Juris Doctor candidates from the graduates of the UE Bachelor of Laws from 1960 to 2016.
UE President Zosimo Battad likewise congratulated the batch that was conferred the degrees.

“We congratulate the newly conferred Juris Doctor graduates of the UE College of Law. This conferment ceremony recognizes JD as equivalent to a doctoral degree in non-law disciplines for purposes of appointment or employment, ranking and compensation,” Battad said.
The Juris Doctor degree, which was implemented in 2017, replaced the previous Bachelor of Laws degree in the UE College of Law.
