Makati City backs Makatrix Robotics Team’s World Championship stint

MANILA, Philippines — Makati City is supporting Makati High School’s robotics team which is set to compete in the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas by shouldering its transportation and accommodation expenses.

The Makatrix Robotics Team, is composed of Grade 12 students John Ashley Alvarado, Enriquito Yamzon, Brian Bernabe, and Fritz Rivera.

They are the Philippines’ lone secondary public school representative for the world championship from April 25 to May 3.

Makatrix will be competing in the High School Division category of the event against 11,500 teams from 40 countries.

“We have shouldered all their expenses for airfare and accommodations, so they have nothing to worry about and can focus fully on the competition,” said Makati Mayor Abby Binay in a statement on Wednesday.

Binay added that each member of the team, including the coach, Zernie Pugao and principal Corazon Caculitan received a P58,000 pocket money during their courtesy call last Monday prior to their departure.

“Beyond winning in the competition, we aim to showcase the talents and ingenuity of our public school students on the global stage,” Binay said.

Last February, Makatrix won the 2024 VEX Robotics Competition Philippine National Championship held at Xavier School in San Juan City.

They also emerged as champions in the VEX Regional Championship Over Under Scrimmage on December 9 last year.

They also ranked third in the Robotics Innovative Project in the 14th Sci-Math Interschool Challenge held at De La Salle Integrated School on March 11, 2023.

The VEX Robotics World Championship is sponsored by the REC Foundation and the Northrop Grumman Foundation.
