Flag flown half-staff at Senate to mourn passing of Rene Saguisag

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine flag at the Senate was flown at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of former senator and human rights lawyer Rene Saguisag.

His family announced Saguisag’s death on Wednesday. He was 84.

The former senator’s term in the upper chamber was short-lived, serving only one term in 1987 and ending in 1992.

He chaired the Senate’s committee on ethics and privilege and the ad hoc committee on the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

“He was one of the two senators who attended all 415 session days from July 1987 to June 1990,” the Senate’s profile on Saguisag read.

Before being a senator, Saguisag also served as a spokesman for then-president Cory Aquino.
