5.1-magnitude earthquake jolts Batanes area

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Batanes on Tuesday evening, the state seismology bureau said.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the epicenter of the earthquake was west of Sabtang, Batanes.

It also had a depth of focus of two kilometers.

Phivolcs said that Intensity IV was felt in Sabtang, Batanes, while Intensity III was felt in Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyuga, also in Batanes.

Instrumental Intensity III was also felt in Basco, Phivolcs added.

The agency likewise said that there were no damages to be expected after the quake, but aftershocks may occur.
