4.5 magnitude earthquake hit waters off Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-4.6 earthquake hit the waters off Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its initial bulletin, Phivolcs said the tectonic tremor happened at 7:21 a.m., some 48 kilometers (km) southwest of Hinatuan. The quake had a depth of focus of 20 km.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake is an aftershock of the 7.4 magnitude temblor that jolted Hinatuan on December 2, 2023.

The quake registered strength of Instrumental Intensity II in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, and Instrumental Intensity I in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

It was reported at Intensity II in Bislig City, and Intensity I in Hinatuan and Tagbina, all in Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs previously explained that reported intensity is the strength of an earthquake as felt and reported by people.

Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured by an intensity meter or scale.
