DOH logs 34 cases of heat-related illness so far this year
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday said that it has recorded 34 heat-related illnesses due to the rising heat index nationwide as of April 18.
Six of the cases in Central Visayas, Ilocos Region, and Soccsksargen have resulted in death and are subject to verification.
“The causes of death are being verified,” the DOH told INQURER.net.
The DOH provided the data amid the rising heat index in several areas of the country, which at times soars to the dangerous level of from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius.
“The most number of heat related illnesses in recent years was recorded at 513 in the year 2023,” the DOH noted.
In a previous advisory, the DOH warned the public that extremely hot temperatures may cause heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
Danger signs
Symptoms of heat cramps include muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headache and vomiting, while heat exhaustion symptoms include fatigue, weakness, headache and nausea.
Heat stroke may lead to loss of consciousness, confusion or disorientation, and heart attack.
The DOH advised those experiencing such symptoms to find shade and rest, remove layered clothing, apply a cold compress, drink cold water slowly, and seek immediate medical assistance.
Prevention
Heat-related illnesses, the DOH added, can be avoided by staying hydrated, avoiding sodas, iced tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks, wearing loose and light clothing, limiting outdoor activities, and wearing / using protection against the sun, such as caps, umbrellas, and sunscreen.
