Zamboanga kicks off campaign vs dengue

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Monday morning’s noise barrage and motorcade signaled the city government’s declaration of war against dengue that has already claimed the lives of 10 children since January this year.

Dr. Rodelin Agbulos, city health officer, told the INQUIRER that a P1.5-million battle fund against dengue has been allotted for the “search and destroy operation of dengue mosquitoes’ breeding places, continuous information and campaign drive,” after the city registered almost 800 cases since the start of the year.

Around 50 vehicles from various government agencies, hospitals and medical companies joined the noise barrage and motorcade that started from the City Hall and ended at the three most affected villages — Guiwan, Tugbungan and Canelar.

Last week, the city government declared the cases as reaching outbreak level.

Agbulos said his office has allotted P1 million for the war against dengue.

Mayor Celso Lobregat on May 9 ordered the immediate release of P559,000 for the procurement of chemicals and other need materials needed for the anti-dengue campaign.
