MANILA, Philippines — Former Speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez’s “freedom of speech” defense in calling for the withdrawal of support from the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R.Marcos Jr. is just an excuse, according to Camiguin Rep. Jurdin Jesus Romualdo.
Romualdo said this as he lauded Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla’s decision to look into Alvarez’ controversial remarks, which authorities are still determining whether it may be considered a “seditious statement.”
“Huwag na po tayong magpalusot (Let’s not make excuses) The former speaker very well knows that free speech is not absolute. One cannot make a seditious call or a libelous statement without facing the consequences,” Romualdo asserted in a statement on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Remulla reminded Alvarez “to act in accordance with the highest standards of ethics, morality, and nationalism, and avoid remarks that would be unbecoming of a member of the House of Representatives.”
His statement came after Alvarez’s controversial speech during a rally in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, over the weekend.
“There is ample evidence, including a recording of the remarks. In fact, there is now an admission from the former speaker. There is a defense-excuse-palusot as well,” Romualdo said.
He likewise suggested that the DOJ issue a show-cause order against Alvarez.
