CHR denounces attack vs barangay safety officers, cop in QC

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said on Thursday that the filing of bills pushing to establish the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) highlights the importance of protecting the well-being of Filipinos in detention centers.

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has denounced the attack against barangay safety officers and a policeman in Quezon City, as it assured the public of working with authorities in administering the case.

CHR issued a statement on Tuesday after a man who allegedly went on a stabbing spree and killed a barangay safety officer and injured another village officer and a policeman last April 10.

“We are one with the government, particularly the relevant agencies, in swiftly administering this case and holding the perpetrator accountable. Let us work together to build a community that values the rights and dignity of all,” CHR said.

Unruly behavior

Citing reports, the commission revealed the unnamed suspect attacked the victims after they confronted them over complaints of his alleged unruly behavior within the area.

“The Commission condemns this reprehensible act committed against our dedicated safety officers, who work tirelessly to preserve law and order and ensure the safety of our communities,” CHR said.

“Such actions jeopardize not only the safety and well-being of those who serve but also the overall peace and security of the community,” it added.

CHR likewise reminded the public “to adhere to the principles of human rights articulated in the Philippine 1987 Constitution, which states that every individual has the right to life, liberty, and security without discrimination of any kind.”
