LUCENA CITY – Two motorists died and five others were injured on Saturday, April 13, after their vehicles – a motorcycle and a car – collided in General Trias City in Cavite province.

The Region 4A police said in a report on Sunday, April 14, that Joshua Iyaya, 25, was driving a Toyota Corolla sedan when he accidentally hit an oncoming motorcycle along CM Delos Reyes Avenue in Barangay (village) Biclatan around 2:30 a.m.

Motorcycle driver “Johnley,” 34, and his back-rider, Melisa Ornopia, 25, both sustained injuries and were rushed to Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital in the locality but the driver died while undergoing treatment.

Iyaya and his four passengers also suffered injuries and were brought to Gen. Trias Medicare Hospital also in the locality. However, one of the passengers, a certain “Jeffrey” also expired while being treated.

The police said Iyaya will be placed under police custody after his release from hospital confinement as the investigation continues.

The report did not specify if the riders were wearing crash helmets for protection.

Wearing crash helmets for all riders of two-wheeled motor vehicles is mandated under Republic Act No. 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.
