MANILA, Philippines — The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Friday advised the elderly, children and those with medical conditions to avoid non-essential trips to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) terminals due to the consistently high heat index.
The advise was issued after an elderly individual required medical attention after experiencing dizziness while welcoming arriving relatives at Naia.
“Given the current weather conditions, we urge everyone to minimize non-essential visits, particularly with vulnerable family members,” said MIAA general manager Eric Ines in a statement.
“We respect that it has become a tradition for our kababayans to send-off and welcome in bulk groups to their relatives at the airport, but the safety and well-being of everyone at our terminals is paramount. That is why we are advising all of them, especially family members included in vulnerable groups, to stay at their home instead of going out and experiencing the scorching weather,” he added.
Citing data from the state weather bureau, the MIAA said the heat index in Metro Manila had already peaked at 42°C (degrees Celsius) on April 9, constantly ranging from 39°C to 40°C range observed between April 6 to 8.
Forecasts also show that the heat index will remain dangerously high, expected to reach 40°C on April 12, and 41°C on April 13.
Hence, Ines instructed all operational departments to intensify assisting and overseeing passengers who may experience medical emergencies due to the intense heat.
