MANILA, Philippines — The School Division superintendents of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Metro Manila (the National Capital Region, or NCR) mayors are authorized to adjust class schedules in their jurisdiction in case of extreme heat, Metro Manila Council President Francis Zamora said on Friday.
According to Zamora, who is the mayor of San Juan City, the change in class timetables was discussed with the DepEd.

“When it comes to the suspension of classes, based on our conversation with a DepEd official, city mayors and division authorities will have the authority to determine shifts in class schedules,” Zamora said in Filipino in a press conference.
He added that shifting class schedules would also depend on the number of schools and students in the town or city.

Some LGUs in Metro Manila have implemented schedule changes, such as a morning class-only schedule or a shortened schedule, to combat the intense heat index felt nationwide
The DepEd also gave school heads the authority to suspend classes in case of extreme heat, as announced in a statement on April 4.
