MANILA, Philippines — The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), a key Manila university, is allowing faculty members to conduct online classes starting on Monday (April 15) as a measure to protect teachers and students from extreme heat.
In an advisory on Thursday (March 11), PLM said that this measure was part of mitigation efforts against dangerous levels of heat index in Manila.

“Effective April 15, 2024, due to increasing heat index and as part of our commitment of prioritizing the health and safety of our stakeholders, faculty members are given the discretion to shift to online synchronous mode of learning depending on the requirement(s) of the subject course,” PLM said.
The university said it will update students on changes in class schedules as it issues guidelines for online classes.
“The PLM administration will release updates should there be further developments and changes on the conduct of classes,” PLM said.

“The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and College Deans shall institute mechanisms that will monitor the conduct of online classes,” it added.
On April 9, the local government of Manila ordered a change in the schedule of face-to-face classes in public schools to 6 a.m. to 12 noon starting on April 11until May 28 because of extreme heat.
