No tsunami threat in PH after magnitude 6.7 quake in Mariana Islands

There is no threat of tsunami in the country after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Mariana Islands, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday night.

MANILA, Philippines — There is no threat of a tsunami in the country after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the Mariana Islands, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday night.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” said Phivolcs in an advisory.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake occurred around 7:03 p.m., with a depth of 212 kilometers.

A magnitude 7.2 — initially reported as a 7.5 — earthquake also struck the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, knocking off buildings and triggering tsunami alerts.
