South Road repairs aggravate traffic flow
Motorists and public utility vehicles are advised to avoid using the South Coastal Road (SCR) due to ongoing road repairs by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which began yesterday,
Director Rafael Yap of the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) said yesterday’s traffic congestion from Mambaling intersection until P. del Rosario streets started as early as 9 a.m.
“We received a lot of complaints about the traffic but I think the public was informed about the road repair. It was the contractor’s responsibility to do that, not the government, ” Yap told Cebu Daily News.
Traffic occurred when the road used by vehicles coming from Talisay City and heading to City Hall was closed for the repairs.
The trucks were advised to take another lane while the smaller vehicles still passed by the road being repaired.
“I was not informed if the contractor was able to put up road signs to warn the public because I was not in the area during the incident. But I hope they did that,” Yap said.
Yap advised motorists to use the main highway to avoid inconvenience. Citom opened one lane of SCR near the City Hall side to reduce the volume of vehicles diverted to the Mambaling access road.
Six to 10 wheeler trucks were made to pass the Mambaling access of the SRP to N. Bacalso avenue to P. del Rosario Street and the new Imus Road to a portion of M. J. Cuenco Avenue.
Traffic congestion is expected to continue today as DPWH tries to finish their repair works at the SCR. Correspondents Careen L. Malahay and Edison delos Angeles
