In Sorsogon, school tweaks class schedule due to extreme heat

SORSOGON CITY — A secondary school in Bulan town in Sorsogon province has adopted a new class schedule for all grade levels, mandating all classes to be conducted only in the morning.

In its memorandum no. 029, Bulan National High School (BNHS) adjusted the schedules of all classes from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. only. No classes will be conducted in the afternoon.

This new schedule will be effective beginning Wednesday, April 3 until the remaining two months of the school year.

BNHS Principal Alex Rodriguez emphasized in the memorandum issued Wednesday that the adjustment was necessary for the safety of their students.

“We recognize the potential health risks associated with the prolonged exposure to extreme heat, we believe that it’s necessary for everyone’s safety,” Rodriguez said.

Wearing comfortable clothes during class hours are encouraged and allowed by the school provided they are “decent.”

The Department of Education (DepEd) has earlier allowed schools to implement measures to ensure students’ welfare amid the extreme heat.

On Tuesday, the heat index of Sorsogon province reached 35.1 degree Celsius, which was relatively lower than 37.7 degree Celsius heat index on April 1.
