MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes measured ay magnitude 4.7 and 4.8 hit the coast of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro three hours apart on Easter Sunday, state seismologists said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the first temblor (magnitude of 4.7), occurred at 4:00 p.m. some 31 kilometers (km) west of Mamburao.
The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 24 kilometers it added.
Phivolcs recorded the following intensities due to the earthquake:
Felt Intensities:
- Intensity IV (Moderately strong) – Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity III (Weak) – Santa Cruz and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro; City of Calapan, San Teodoro, and Baco, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity II (Slightly felt) – Abra De Ilog and Paluan, Occidental Mindoro; Naujan, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity I (Scarcely perceptible) – Gloria, Pinamalayan, and Socorro, Oriental Mindoro; Looc, Occidental Mindoro
Instrumental Intensities:
- Intensity III (Weak) – Puerto Galera and City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity I (Scarcely perceptible) – Batangas City, Batangas; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro
Felt intensity, according to Phivolcs, reflects the actual ground shaking experienced, whereas the instrumental intensity is determined by measurements from intensity meters located in and around the epicentral area.
The second temblor (magnitude of 4.8) occurred at 7:04 p.m. some 25 kilometers west of Mamburao.
It was also tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 21 kilometers state seismologists said in a separate earthquake advisory.
The following intensities were recorded following the magnitude 4.8 earthquake:
Felt Intensities:
- Intensity IV (Moderately strong) – Puerto Galera, Occidental Mindoro
Instrumental Intensities:
- Intensity IV (Moderately strong) – Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro; City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro
- Intensity III (Weak) – Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Abra De Ilog, Occidental Mindoro
Phivolcs said that no damage nor aftershocks are expected.
