Coast Guard rescues over 100 people from Tondo fire

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Coast Guard said it helped rescue more than 100 persons, including a two-year-old injured child, from a fire that razed hundreds of shanties in Isla Puting Bato in Manila on Friday.

In a report, the PCG said among those recused were four injured persons identified as Joel Bumaray, 23; Reymart Escosis, 14; Ericson Managilay, 14;  Kyle De Guzman, 2.

Hundreds of families were affected by the blaze, which destroyed property with an estimated value of P3 million, the PCG said.

It said that its Coast Guard Detachment in North Harbor deployed four teams, which included a speed boat and a rigid hull inflatable boat, to help put out the fire.

Three teams from Malayan Towage with Tugboat Molo and Monarch Tugboat Ensign were also deployed while 50 fire trucks and 10 ambulances responded to the fire, the PCG said.

As of press time, investigation on cause of the fire was still ongoing, it added.
