MANILA, Philippines—Lauro Vizconde came to the defense of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and the National Bureau of Investigation Wednesday, saying it was wrong to impute any motive against them since it was President Benigno Aquino III who ordered a reinvestigation of the deaths of his wife and daughters 20 years ago.

“They were just following orders from the President. Why should Freddie Webb take that personally?” Vizconde said in an interview at his residence in BF Homes in Parañaque.

“Some people must realize that the secretary and her agency could get into serious trouble if they don’t follow orders from their superiors,” he added.

Vizconde said he was curious about NBI’s revelation that it has new witnesses who can prove that Hubert Webb was in the country when his family was murdered.

“I would still like to talk to them, if it’s possible. You can’t blame me if I’m curious. I want to see for myself whether they are credible,” he said.
