MMDA inks deal with DOST, UP for eco-friendly ferry on Pasig River

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Thursday that it signed a memorandum of agreement with the University of the Philippines (UP) for an eco-friendly ferry system for inland waterways.

According to MMDA Deputy Chairman and Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr., the system will be pilot-tested in the Pasig River Ferry System.

“Aking pinapasalamatan ang UP Diliman, DOST at iba pang partner agencies para sa proyektong ito dahil pangarap ko na maging world class, clean, at environment-friendly ang Pasig River Ferry,” San Juan said.

(I thank UP Diliman, the Department of Science and Technology, and other partner agencies for this project because it is my dream for the Pasig River Ferry to become world-class, clean, and environment-friendly.)

The system will also be funded by the DOST.

The MMDA said that the project will aim to create an eco-friendly ferry system in the Pasig River that will alleviate traffic congestion on the main roads of Metro Manila.

It will also include the development of a fully electric ferry boat and an on-shore charging infrastructure, the MMDA added.
