COAL MINER BEATEN TO DEATH
A sleeping coal miner was allegedly beaten to death by his co-worker in barangay Calagasan, Argao town, southern Cebu, yesterday.
Bernabe Vidas, 21, was brought to a clinic but did not make it alive.
The suspect, Nixon Alberca, 28, was arrested by police.
Police investigation revealed that Alberca beat Vidas with a 3×4-inch wood three times while the victim was sleeping on a wooden bed at the back of their workplace’s canteen around 9 p.m.
Police said Alberca was irked when he found Vidas asleep on his bed.
“He (Alberca) said he was drunk and he didn’t know what he did,” said Insp. Alejandro P. Batobalonos, chief of Argao police.
Alberca will be charged with murder next week./REPORTER RHEA RUTH V. ROSELL
MEDICAL CHECKUP
At least 500 policemen 40 years old and above underwent basic medical checkup to monitor their physical conditions.
Senior Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe, chief of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said he ordered the checkup to identify the job that would fit the physical capabilities of an officer.
The program stemmed after one of the policemen died of cardiac arrest while on duty two weeks ago.
Buenafe said those who had health problems would be given lighter jobs.
Mostly of them underwent cholesterol and blood pressure checkup, among others./correspondent chito aragon
