MANILA, Philippines — As the summer season draws near, the Philippine National Police (PNP) once again reminded the public to beware of the “vacation scam,” in which clients are enticed to purchase promos of travel packages offered at a very low price.
Col. Jean Fajardo, PNP spokesperson, said fraudsters usually offer potential victims airfare tickets and hotel accommodations at a meager price.
“Be careful and mindful. As much as possible, transact only to registered and legitimate travel agencies in purchasing accommodations, transport, or car rentals to avoid these scammers,” she said in a press briefing.

Earlier, Fajardo revealed the proliferation of the new scheme, which seemed to have stemmed from locals’ mood for “revenge travel” following years of lockdown and travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the Anti-Cybercrime Group data, authorities have so far recorded a total of 478 cases of vacation scams.
Broken down, 39 cases were recorded in 2021, 91 in 2022, 313 in 2023, and 35 this year.
In verifying these offers or avoiding getting scammed, Fajardo said that the PNP and the Department of Tourism are open to accommodate their questions.
