MANILA, Philippines — A 32-year-old patrolman was arrested in Sta. Cruz, Manila for indiscriminately firing his gun and injuring a student in her leg, police said on Wednesday.
In a report, the Manila Police District (MPD) identified the policeman as Ed Emmanuel Enguerra, who reportedly went to a baptismal celebration for 18-year-old victim Jasmine Cortina’s nephew along P. Guevarra Street, corner Fugoso Street on March 10.
According to police, Enguerra briefly left the area to check on a supposed victim of domestic abuse — Cortina’s friend identified as “Bea” — after overhearing their conversation via video call. However, when the suspect arrived at Bea’s home, her live-in partner, who was allegedly physically abusing her, was not in the area.

MPD said Enguerra returned to the event and continued drinking with his friends. His wife, Jolina Consolacion, came around 4:20 a.m. on March 11 and reportedly caused commotion while fetching him. Embarrassed by this, the suspect drew his firearm and reportedly shot his gun, injuring Cortina on her right thigh.
Responding officers arrested the suspect, while the victim was rushed to Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center and then transferred to Metropolitan Hospital.
Authorities recovered Enguerra’s service firearm and his Philippine National Police identification card. Following his arrest, the suspect was presented for inquest for indiscriminate discharge of firearm and reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury.
