 Taal Volcano spews volcanic smog

MANILA, Philippines – State volcanologists on Tuesday said volcanic smog (vog) was observed in Taal Volcano and affected several towns in Batangas.The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the vog was observed in the Taal Main Crater at around 2:00 p.m. and affected the municipalities of Agoncillo, Laurel, Balete, Sta. Teresita, Calaca, Mabini, Mataasnakahoy, Lemery, San Nicolas and  Talisay.

Vog consists of fine droplets containing acidic volcanic gas such as sulfur dioxide, which can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.

Taal Volcano, however, remains under Alert Level 1, which means that it is still in a state in unrest.
