MANILA, Philippines — The Senate on Monday adopted Senate Resolution No. 946 – a measure recognizing the “enduring friendship and cooperation” between the Philippines and South Korea as both nations mark the 75th year of diplomatic relations.
SRN 946 was introduced by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian with all senators made co-authors of the resolution.
“The Philippines and South Korea have launched new platforms for dialogue on harnessing [the] blue economy as well as in other areas of cooperation on key marine and maritime issues, all of which are paramount considerations for the Philippines as an archipelagic state,” the resolution said.
“Both countries have continuously collaborated in the area of agriculture through smart agriculture missions, with the aim of promoting smart farming and agriculture mechanization, as well as exploring possible areas of investments and best practices sharing,” it added.
Meanwhile, Gatchalian, in his sponsorship speech delivered during Monday’s plenary session said the “enduring bond” between the two countries spanning over 70 years “traces its roots back to 1949.”
“The depth of our friendship was further solidified during the Korean War, when the Philippines courageously deployed the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea—standing shoulder to shoulder with our Korean brothers and sisters in their pursuit of peace and freedom,” said Gatchalian.
Gatchalian added that the continuing “mutual cooperation and friendship” between the Philippines and South Korea have also contributed to the promotion of diplomatic relations and growth across various areas.”
“The collaboration between our countries which started in defense has since extended to trade and investment, maritime affairs, and people-to-people exchange, among others,” he explained.
It then prompted Gatchalian to note that the shared history between the nations has “blossomed into a modern-day alliance” backed by diversity and mutual respect.
