MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed on Monday one of its biggest patrol vessels on Philippine (Benham) Rise following the reported “loitering” of two Chinese research vessels in the area.
The 84-meter BRP Gabriela Silang — PCG’s second-largest and most modern vessel — will conduct maritime domain awareness and monitor local fishermen activities for two weeks, according to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo. He also added that the deployment also seeks to intensify PCG presence in the north and eastern Luzon waters where Batanes islands are also located.
“We will also check the reported Chinese research vessels in [Philippine] Rise,” Balilo said in a statement.

The Philippine Rise is a resource-rich submerged landmass within the country’s exclusive economic zone. The area is considered an important marine resource for fisherfolk of Isabela, Aurora, and Catanduanes provinces.
Meanwhile, Balilo said air assets of PCG’s aviation force are also on standby for possible aerial surveillance.
