Student drowns in Rizal's Wawa River

LUCENA CITY — A picnic turned tragic after a 22-year-old student drowned on Thursday (Feb. 29) in Wawa River in Rodriguez, Rizal province, the police said.

In a report, the Police Region 4A on Friday said Sherwin James Monleon and his classmates went for a swim in the Wawa River in Barangay San Rafael.

At 2:40 p.m., Monleon was spotted by his classmates being dragged away by the strong river current due to fatigue after long hours of swimming.

The search-and-rescue team recovered Monleon’s body floating in another part of the river at 10:35 p.m.

Police said the father of the victim believed that his son died from drowning and waived the conduct of an autopsy. INQ
