MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday said that the government will elevate the Philippines as a diving and biodiversity hotspot.

Marcos was supposed to deliver a speech at the Philippine International Dive Expo but canceled his appearance last minute. Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco delivered Marcos’ speech for him.

“Through strategic investments in infrastructure and sustainable tourism initiatives, the government will continue to elevate our country’s standing as a hotspot of biodiversity and underwater adventure,” Marcos said.

“Each dive taken, each coral reef explored, and each aquatic life discovered is a chance to deepen our connection with our environment and reaffirm our duty to its preservation,” he added.

According to Marcos, the Philippine waters are teeming with life as a mega biodiverse country.

The expo would allow more collaboration between stakeholders from within the country and abroad.

“We Filipinos are blessed and grateful to be entrusted with the guardianship of this precious natural treasure. With each ebb and flow of the tide, our waters bid to be seen with wonder and, of course, to be taken care of,” said Marcos.

The President said that he looked forward to showcasing new destinations and inviting potential investors.
