MANILA, Philippines — The eastern portion of Visayas and Mindanao may experience overcast skies and rain on Wednesday due to the effects of the easterlies, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Easterlies are warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean.

While this weather system may bring hot and humid conditions, Pagasa specialist Rhea Torres advised residents in some parts of Visayas and Mindanao that it will still bring rain over their areas.

“The northeastern portion of Mindanao as well as the southern portion of Visayas have a high chance of experiencing continuous rainfall due to the easterlies,” Torres said in a mix of Filipino and English.

Pagasa’s 4 a.m. advisory noted that Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur will experience scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the easterlies.

The state weather bureau cautioned residents in the four provinces of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.

On the other hand, the rest of the country will have pleasant weather conditions despite some rain chances, Torres’ report continued.

“We still have fair weather today except for chances of isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in some parts of the Luzon area,” she said.

As for the country’s seaboards, no gale warning is hoisted, but Torres advised seafarers in extreme Northern Luzon to stay cautious as waves may be as high as 2.8 meters.

State meteorologists are also not monitoring any low-pressure area entering or forming in the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday.
